Assignment #3- Cultural References

minerva_ppeg.jpg (350×347)

These days, I am largely involved with culture. I, or something in representation of me, can often be found on military medals. The United States Military Coat of Arms features my helmet. In 2011, two new coins were created in order to recognize the Medal of Honor, I am on the center of those two coins.

The University of Lincoln union rugby team uses me as their logo, whenever they are victorious, they have won in my honor.

A third cultural reference is the Athena Nike Temple. Created in 426-421 B.C, the temple is located on the southwest tip of the Acropolis plateau. Shortly after it was built, the temple was used as a place in which deities worshiped. Within the temple there was once a statue, made of wood, which depicted myself, a Nike (victory) goddess holding a pomegranate in the right hand and a helmet in the left. The statue of me was diverse from most Nike goddess's because I did not bear wings, as most Nike goddess's were said to. The reasoning behind this is thought to be so that I would look over the city of Athens and not fly away. Throughout past and recent times, I have been involved culture in multiple ways.
